PPP rocks!

When I joined PayPerPost a long time back, I remember having asked one of the other members who was already in there about the kind of money one could expect to..I presumed that even if I made four dollars per post, I could make 12 dollars per blog a day. But then, these days, I do not write to the maximum limit that is permissible with PayPerPost. But still consistently make more than what I calculated then. The reason: Simply that PayPerPost has increased in its value so much that the pay that you sometimes make per post simply takes your breath away. For example, there is one 'opportunity' out there now that pays $1000 per post! I was like, Wow!

Now, there are other websites too that have unwittingly copied the PPP model to pay bloggers for reviewing, like Review Me. But I guess profit is a key there. Advertisers are asked to pay 50 percent service charge. That means, only half of what you pay can actually be used to pay the bloggers to write. PPP on the other hand is cool, just 35 percent!

The only thing is that bloggers require a Disclosure as you see beside my post, to make money blogging. But then, that only increases your credibility as a writer!!

It is customary these days to make shirts for every tiny group you belong to in college. It is just a mark to show that you belong to that particular group or department in college. In my college, there are also tshirts made for those who do not belong to any department. And that's how they want to be seen!

Rather than making their own designs, there was this painters group who got greek shirts done. It became an instant craze, simply because not many have these greek letter shirts out here. This card is now offering quite a few interesting offers. Till December, there are no interest charges on balance transfers. I would then advise you to go for this card, in case you wanted debt transfers or had to do some purchasing. You can actually save a lot of money during this period over other cards.

I love watching Hockey and watch it whenever it is telecast on the Sports channels here. I love the way the guys pump and add energy to the sport, as well as how they fight like bulls when things do not go their way.

The fuel prices have been increasing with every passing day. Though there has been a slump over the past few days, if you look at a long-period perspective, petrol is getting unaffordable for the common man.

One way forward is to go electric. But that just doesn't seem to be happening. I shall not go into the controversy that is surrounding this issue. However the other way is quite easy. It is through improving the performance of the vehicle for the same quantity of fuel.

Bank of America is under a controversy for treating a fraud victim like a criminal. Mr. Shinnick was given a fraud cheque, and when though he was suspicious, when he tried depositing the cheque, he was caught and put behind bars and shabbily treated like a criminal.

Not that Mr. Shinnick was right throughout. A Digg member points out from his own experience that mentioning your suspicion right upfront becomes very important. But anyway, the damage has been done, and BoA has of late list over $50 million in deposits from customers who seem to be protesting the way Mr. Shinnick was treated.

Why I Love PPP

If you blog or atleast keep track of the blogging world, you would have surely heard about the newest phenomenon, PayPerPost. PPP, as it is widely known is a 'paid to review' website where quality bloggers get paid for review of websites and new products in the market.

How it works is the advertiser offers a certain amount of money for every blogger in the network who accepts to review the product, and if the post matches the basic stipulations, the blogger gets to be paid.

Now, why I like this service is because of its sheer transparency. Ever since PPP started off, there have been quite a lot of copycats who have also offered to pay bloggers for posting reviews. But nothing is as transparent as PPP. The website maintains a message board of all bloggers in the network, and so you simply can't miss out on the hottest product, or more importantly not cheated from getting paid, as you always know if others are also getting paid or not.

More recently, PPP announced a disclosure policy, wherein bloggers were rewarded for being honest to admit that some of their posts were paid, and hence advertiser material. Quite an honest service, I must say..Maybe this was the reason why PPP has simply got popular through word of mouth marketing.

Oceanograms are simply sent on a bottle corked with a message inside to someone somewhere. I have just sent one real oceanogram. But that was not in any bottle. It was a small case of Vicks Vaporub inside which I squeezed my address on a piece of paper and threw it on the sea at Kanyakumari, where the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal meet the Indian Ocean. That was over ten years ago, and I haven't heard from anyone

Google turns to Sun for power

Google is planning to incorporate over 9200 solar panels in its headquarters at Mountainneville, San Francisco, which is popularly known as Googleplex. The power that is expected to be produced is high enough to provide power to 1000 homes.

Google has not divulged the cost of the project, but it expects to recoup the amount in the form of electricity savings in 5-10 years. I see the project extending to India as well, thanks to the amazing sunlight received all through the year in South India, home to Google's India offices.

This is very well a right step for other corporates to follow suit. Clean and green is the way to go!

Opinions on Air Deccan's low cost-no frills leadership

Air Deccan, the hugely popular low-cost, no-frills flight service in India has been the subject of many a joke in recent times, mainly because of it simply being a low-cost, no-frills service. Jokes have been cast as to this being simply a Bus that flies. A contest in my college invited opinions from students on why this is so, and if they endorse the jokes cast, and what is to be done. The following are the top entries.

Yup I have travelled by Air deccan.. its service levels are poor compared to other domestic airlines. but pal what do u expect ? its A LOW COST AIRLINE . Period.
The above has been exxagerated exponentially.. ofcourse ..

Its basic group dynamics.. each group of friends has one so called "butt of all jokes" who is the nerd/ the loser.. who is the source of time pass and enterntainment to the others.. mainly the studs..

so is the case in industry.. each industry has a company tagged as a "loser".. mainly by the market leaders through underhand ways.. also by the common people... who can and want to travel by something this is not so inclusive.. say a kingfisher airline or jet..

Suggestions to improve:
Silence the critics by actions.. if AIr Deccan/ or any loser has to survive/ thrive, it will have to create its niche.. and be good ( if not great at it).. and then shout from the roof top of how good it is. in what its set out to be..

air deccan (has been targeted particularly as against spice jet/go air) coz it was the first low cost airline which tried to challenge the other big 3.. and it had its teething problems.. so the big 3 jumped on it.. and ensured that air deccan is positioned in the minds of the people as " a bus that flies".. so clearly wiped of any significant market overlap by air deccan..

next.. the people who used to fly by the big 3.. u hv to understand their psyce.. as soon as there was this low cost.. their "status" as someone who " flew and had tags ontheir travel bags" was threatned.. so their reaction to it ??..
" FLYING BY AIR DECAAN ?? HUH.. its NOT FLYING AT ALL>.. its LIKE BEST BUS .. Flying is only when u fly by KF or IA or Jet"..

eg. new competition in hair care segment. .. initially ridiculed parachute as the sticky messing oil which only the nerds put.. and succeeded to a large extent for a while..
what did parachute do ? hit back and shout from roof top..

1. I have not used Air Deccan. But I think this is not a true picture of Air Deccan. If at all, it only is true to an extent of 10%.

2. The major thing that led to this image is Air Deccan's initial performance. Many of its aircrafts have had problems while landing. In its quest to reduce costs, Air Deccan had recruited engineers at low wages compared to other airlines. This leads to high attrition rates. For example, all Air Deccan engineers resigned and joined another airline with very short notice. Air Deccan had problems operating flights on time during the crisis.

3. The major issue facing the company is cash flow. It should sign proposals for additional debts, as it has done in the past. It should not compromise on the quality of engineers with it. Other factors are fuel prices and airport infrastrusture. Fuel costs accounts for nearly 40% of its cost. It should outsource most of its administrative and accounting operations to reduce costs. It should put more pressure on the government to come out with new policies towards airport infrastucture because it is the only airline which, if it crosses the current rough patch, can give a threat to the extablished airlines in India in the near future.

I fly Air Deccan and seriously I think against popular belief this would actually work towards enhancing Airdeccan's image. Any flier reading this would rate this as an overly exagerated piece..while actually thinking why not Airdeccan and not why AirDeccan. This doesnt represent even the bullock cart service in India. All fliers would recognise that some basic safety stipulations have to be followed by any airline and would recognise such piece as a gimmick and start thinking of flying in it...Its strategyof low cost and paid service has created a revolution in the industry and nothing needs to be done to improve their service...

lets look at the consumer satisfaction and value of money index. if we take one of the measure to be evalute them, it could could be ratio of perceived value to actual value of money,

we reach the figure of 1, Value for Money = (Perceived value of money / Actual Value of Money).

clearly other airlines in the same sector, Spicejet, GoAir etc. provide a better ratio at 1.5 while similar ratio for Kingfisher will be 2.

thus what is expressed in joke is highly indicative of Air Deccan.

The current image of Air Deccan is due to 2 problems:

1. Spreading too thin and opening flights in various sectors without getting the existent sectors break-even.

hence Air Deccan should concerntrate on limited segments, not overuse or over commit limited capacity, and once the current sectors are profitable it should move into other sectors. this will give better focus and resource utilization to Air Deccan.

2. Selling flight tickets at single digit price. this strategy though good for awareness and penetration severly detoriates the brand. the customer expectation from the airlines and its service is low before he enters the airport. hence even if customer gets odinary service he perceives it to be a poor service.

In conclusion, Air Deccan has reached a high level of awareness and penetration. It should get away from foolish brand building exercise like selling tickets regularly at low prices. Concerntrate on limited segments andonce these are profitable should venture into newer segments.

Cockroach eating contest irks PETA

Yuck...Do these people require PETA to come over and tell them not to eat cockroaches..live ones at that!!! Yet, PETA has asked the theme park operator where the live-cockroach eating competition is being held to break the current world record of 36 insects in one minute to stop the contest from being held.

Sadly, the only response against the competition has come from those who were not able to participate in the contest because of operational problems.

Did you hear this? Google is in talks with YouTube, the popular video sharing service to buy the firm for over 1.2 billion dollars. This means that it is going to be a mega deal in sorts for Google which can then make a monopoly,or atleast a oligopoly out of the video market with their Google Videos. Not many other services are as popular as these two under question.

It will be interesting to see if Google does succeed in this or if Yahoo would step up and make a higher bid. In my view, this is a critical move for Yahoo as well, as it can let go one huge pie if they don't make a bid as well..

Sometime back, the monsoon rains in Kerala, India was in news. It rained red. This aroused the curiosity of scientists the world over. While those who are sceptical to anything interesting happening dismissed it as due to the winds from Arabia carrying the red sand, others believe that it is because of it raining alien.

This does not sound far fetched though. Dr. Louis Godfrey from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam says that there was a sound sonic boom(which is usually caused by passing meteorite) in Kerala just sometime before the rains and this might have caused alien particles to land down with the clouds. He also tested the rain particles and proved no dust particles, which disproves the first theory.

However the second theory still does not have too many takers.
Maybe people are waiting for another rain of the same sort, which they will use to make a first-mover-advantageous theory.

I pretty much guess that this is one of the first reports on this news. Google has finally did the most awaited..Adsense finally arrives on Orkut. For the uninitiated, Adsense is Google's sponsored listing programme through which hundreds and thousands of website owners advertise on Google by paying up for their Adwords programme. This was already made available in Gmail, Blogger, etc which are part of Google.

Sania Mirza from India lost to Martina Hingis just last week in front of the home crowd at the Sunfeast Open..Today in a historic revenge, she has come back and defeated Martina Hingis 4-6 6-0 6-4 at the Korea open..

Now what impresses me about Sania was the temperament to come back and hit back. Everyone knows the kind of swing she gets into if she starts to get going, especially against the big stars.

The difference this time however has been the time of winning it. Usually in the past, she won against opponents who weren't aware of her big strokes and so were caught by surprise.But this time, it was against someone who has actually studied her and infact defeated her twice in the recent past.

Time to rejoice and get back into the top 30, rather top 10 this time around. Go Sania.

According to a new blog post on the Googleblog, the Sitemaps has been renamed as the Goolge Webmaster tools. It is not just that, a lot of developments have been incorporated to help webmasters. This include a preference to include 'www' to be accounted while indexing or not, view errors while crawling the site, analyse the robots.txt file, see what searches bring uop your site and at what position, a reinclusion request for those who had violated rules earlier. Gmail Will Be Invite-Free for in Japan Says Google

After Australia and New Zealand, Google Inc., the world's biggest Internet search engine, said on Wednesday it is opening the Japanese-language version of its email service to anyone who wants to sign up. In other markets, signups are limited to those who receive email invitations from existing users or access it via mobile phones.

I feel Google is following two different strategies depending on the demand of the products. Japan, Australia and New Zealand have lesser peer networking, and this makes it difficult for Google to spread their product through referrals. Or probably, Google is not targetting these three countries for their network site, Orkut, which requires an invite.

It will be interesting to see how Google build up their users in Japan and other countries and how the two different strategies work out.

Ipods are available illegally in India, got in through illegal channels from Singapore and other South East Asian markets. But Apple is not worried about this. The reason seems to be that no matter sold illegally or not, the company receives its share of revenue. It is the local government that seems to be losing out. But then, when the government is not concerned about the illegal routes of sale, customers are having a nice time in buying ipods at prices competitive to those in US or anywhere else.

Waging War Against Click Fraud

"When it comes to click fraud, search engines are on the defensive. In lawsuits, advertisers accuse Internet companies of failing to adequately guard against a practice that's lining the pockets of scam artists and artificially inflating ad rates. Part of the problem is that search engines like Google and Yahoo! aren't doing enough to stop it."

Well, my view is that click fraud is something that cannot be stopped altogether...At present, the only way search engines can determine a fraud click is either from a click attack or repeated ad clicks from the same ip.

But then, look at third world countries, the exchange rates are high enough that even a couple of clicks a day can make enough returns..And sometimes, search engines will not even be able to detect them.

Only way out is to make hay while the sun shines and keep going with the PPC model as long as it exists. And when fraud detection goes out of hand, find some suitable alternative advertising model to shift to.

Firefox Celebrates Their 200th Million Download

To celebrate the 200 millionth download of Firefox, the Oregon State Linux Users Group created a 45,000+ square foot crop circle of the Firefox logo in an Amity, Oregon oat field (with permission, of course). The circle's planning took two weeks and it took a team of 12 more than 14 hours to stomp the image into the oats.

Firefox has now seriously taken over IE in terms of popularity. Added to this, the fact that someone can be earning by referring Firefox to his friend has caught everyone into downloading and promoting it..IE should now pull up their socks, if they don't want to be another Netscape...

Google is suddenly making news on almost all its products..Till sometime back, Adsense/Adwords was the only visible form of revenue that Google was making. Then recently came Maps and Videos; so much that Google dumped Froogle out from the homepage and brought in Videos.
