Gmail Will Be Invite-Free for in Japan Says Google

After Australia and New Zealand, Google Inc., the world's biggest Internet search engine, said on Wednesday it is opening the Japanese-language version of its email service to anyone who wants to sign up. In other markets, signups are limited to those who receive email invitations from existing users or access it via mobile phones.

Or probably, Google is not targetting these three countries for their network site, Orkut, which requires an invite.

It will be interesting to see how Google build up their users in Japan and other countries and how the two different strategies work out.
